R E L E A S E N O T E S . / ///__/ | | | | | | It’s certainly been a good time to be a role playing fan | | with a PS2, soaking up the graphics and game in Xenosaga | | and Dark Cloud 2 and then mercilessly comparing it to that | | well-endowed cinematic juggernaut, Final Fantasy X. | | An unfortunate side effect of the movie-sized production in | | these marquee titles is that other quality RPGs get swallowed | | by their wake. | | | | Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits is one of these | | less-publicized but still quality RPGs from developer | | Cattle Call, Inc. While not quite the production masterpiece | | of the aforementioned big-name games, Arc does all the | | expected questing, character development, and story exposition | | right. It then trumps the other games with its dynamic combat | | system that has an interesting tactical side. | | | | Set thousands of years after the events in the original | | Arc the Lad series, this new Arc finds the world divided | | between two races, the humans and the monstrous Deimos. | | These two races do not get along - a conflict compounded by the | | fact that both races need Spirit Stones to continue their way | | of life. It’s in this conflict that the two main characters, | | the deimos Darc and the human Kharg, discover their biggie-sized | | destinies. The story’s parallels to real life resource/territory | | conflicts are certainly there, but never overtly stated. | | Arc is content instead to be a fantasy adventure story with | | that requisite melodramatic sincerity and high-minded morality | | that RPG fans will appreciate. | | | | Players alternate controlling Kharg and Darc and their | | respective parties as they seek out the five Great Spirit Stones | | that will lend one of them Ultimate Power. Playing from both | | sides of the conflict is one of the game’s great strengths | | - its best moment in fact comes when Darc and Kharg finally | | have a showdown. Players will find 14 different characters | | throughout the story to control in the unique movement-based | | combat system that makes the standoffs in other console RPGs | | seem stiff. Aside from the combat, Arc has the usual elements of | | character development, exploration, evil/misunderstood empires, | | and - yes indeed - airships.
